Introduction

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) is established in 1972 and is the first BME Program in Taiwan. Currently, BME/CYCU offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. program. Biomedical engineering combines engineering expertise with medical needs for the enhancement of health care. It is a branch of engineering in which knowledge and skills are developed and applied to define and solve problems in Biology and medicine. Biomedical engineers may be called upon to design instruments and devices, to bring together knowledge from multidiscipline to develop new procedures, or to carry out research to acquire knowledge needed to solve new problems. Currently, BME/CYCU offers BS, MS, and P.D. programs. Areas of graduate study and research include medical instrumentation, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Bio-signal and medical image processing, Biophotonics, cellular and tissue engineering.

Departmental History

  • The first Department of Biomedical Engineering is founded at Chung Yuan in 1972.

  • The Graduate Program of Master is established in 1983

  • The PhD degree of Biomedical Engineering program was first offered at Institute of Applied Physics in 1992.

  • The doctoral program of Biomedical Engineering is formally established in 1997.

  • The first ABET accredited engineering department in 2004.

Mission

The mission of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to pursue excellence in Biomedical engineering education, research, and innovation; creating and imparting knowledge for improving society, human health, and health care.

Objectives

The Objectives of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to

  • Educate undergraduate students for productive careers and life-long learning, especially in the health-related areas of industry, the professions, and government service;

  • Educate Biomedical engineering graduate students for employment in industry, health professions, government, or academe;

  • Emphasize preparation for leadership roles for all levels of students;

  • Engage in research to support the advanced education of graduate students, maintain the intellectual vitality of the faculty, and expand the frontiers of knowledge in areas of importance to the state and nation;

  • Publish and present the results of our intellectual activities, resulting from both research and teaching advances;

  • Serve our profession through membership and leadership in national and international societies, and serve our wider constituencies by offering our expertise to other health-related professionals, industries, and state and local communities.

Future Prospects

A Biomedical engineering education prepares you for a range of career prospects. Entry-level Biomedical engineering positions include:Staff engineer for a company in the medical device, Biomedical imaging, or pharmaceutical industry. Software engineer; clinical engineer.Technical sales engineer, marketing trainee, or management trainee in a Bioengineering company. Consultant in a healthcare company or investment group.Researcher/engineer in a research lab of a hospital, university, government agency, or military. You might perform research around a certain disease / organ system, help bring a new product to market, or assist in the development of a new technology or research device.

The future of Biomedical engineering at CYCU is bright. Our plan is to continue our expanding research horizons to include teams of researchers in several major areas that include the medical electronics, medical informatics, Biomaterial, Bionano technologies, and tissue engineering. These areas are excellent match with the forthcoming Biomedical device industry lead by the national science counsel and ministry of economical affairs. We sincerely invite you to explore the opportunities in Biomedical engineering with us.
