Student Paper Competition

  • Papers in both oral and poster presentations submitted to GCBME 2018 during the regular “call for papers” are eligible for entry. Students must opt-in to the competition during the submissions process.
  • Submissions are evaluated on their originality, scientific merits, structure, and clarity of composition. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and finalists selected based on the merits of submissions.
  • Finalists must attend the Conference and present their papers as either a podium or poster presentation. First, second and third place winners in both a podium and poster presentation will be selected and these winners will receive a certificate.

Criteria for eligibility

All the following criteria must be met:

  • Submitting author must opt-in to the competition during the regular submission process and follow all the instructions provided on the submission site.
  • The presenting author must be a student of an educational institution of collegiate grade who is devoting more than half-time to studies within the institution at the time the paper was submitted.
  • The paper must be submitted and accepted during the regular “call for papers” process (Note: Post-deadline papers are not part of this competition).
  • Papers describing either complete results of original research or a project containing a significant design element will be accepted as entries. The student author should be listed as the first author and the student’s advisor as the second or the corresponding author. Other individuals may be listed as co-authors, if appropriate.
  • The first author will be considered the “presentation author” and will be required to coordinate communication with the conference office and their co-authors.
  • A student may submit only ONE entry in either oral or poster presentation.
  • Student must present the paper during GCBME 2018 in either oral or poster.

Selection process

  • All properly submitted papers are reviewed and scored according to standard GCBME Scientific Program Committee review criteria.
  • The two highest scoring student papers from each submission theme category presented by either oral or poster will be nominated semi-finalists. (one additional student paper in every additional 30 entries will be nominated if the category has more than 50 entries)
  • The Student Paper Award Review Committee will review all semi-finalists and select 3 finalists judged on innovation, research excellence and presentation skills.
  • The three overall winners in both oral and poster presentation of this Student Paper Competition will receive Certificates of Merit at the closing ceremony of the conference.
